KATHY

A human rights and social justice activist with a varied career in television, radio and print journalism; corporate finance and strategy consulting; government, education, and communications; innovation and impact, Kathy has devoted 40 years to community, public and private sectors. (She started out in politics while still at school, continuing to University and many civil society and government appointments).

Frustrated with the route that formal politics and therefore the growth of our democracy has taken in recent years, she believes she can have a far greater impact by representing community and private sector in Government than continuing to work in civil society. She has spent decades working in, and consulting to Government, including for: SARS, Treasury, IPP office, NPA, Home Affairs, Social Services, ICASA, SABC, SITA. She worked extensively through the 1980s and into 2000s on social justice and media legislation and implementation . Her work in television, print and radio included heading up Election 94 (the largest global broadcast ever) and SABC TV News Transformation. She worked for such notable media organisations as NBC, CBS, BBC, Weekly Mail and Vrye Weekblad.

She has a BA Hons MBA (Wits), diplomas in mediation, and company law, and is completing an LLM in global Digital and Human Rights Law (2024), with a focus on AI. Kathy intends devoting her time in Parliament to ensuring that just and constitutional legislation is rapidly expedited through the Parliamentary portfolio system and drafting, oversight and implementation is diligently enforced. She is also committed to ensuring that direct representation and accountability from politicians is revisited in law, and that the perks and benefits for public representatives are radically trimmed. Her portfolio preferences include Home Affairs; Health; Communications and Sports Arts and Culture as well as Women, Children and People with Disabilities.
